In
the
50s
&
60s,
Pershore
had
a
Caledonian
Society,
with
a
Scottish
Dance
branch.
By
the
mid
1970s,
only
the
Scottish
Dance
branch
was
in
existence
and
that
is
when
our
longest-
serving
member
joined.
At
the
AGM
in
1987,
it
was
decided
to
change
the
name
to
Pershore Scottish Country Dance Society.
Classes
are
held
on
Wednesday
evenings
in
term-time
from
September
through
to
July
and social events during the school holidays.
Full
instruction
is
given
at
all
weekly
classes
and
beginners
and
new
members
are
especially
welcomed.
There
is
no
need
to
come
with
a
partner
-
everyone
partners
someone different for each dance throughout the evening.
Please bring soft soled shoes and a drink if you would like.
Annual Membership is £20, termly class fees are £30.00 - first night free!
Our class teacher is Elisabeth Witter

Scottish
Country
Dancing
is
an
enjoyable
way
of
exercising
your
body
and
your
mind.
The
main
object
of
the
dances
is
social
-
to
experience
the
joy
of
moving
to
music
in
the
company
of
others
who
are
enjoying
themselves.
There
is
an
excellent
NHS
video
promoting
the
health
benefits
of
Scottish
Country dancing which also gives an introduction to the basic steps.
Although
it
is
a
form
of
dancing
with
its
roots
in
Scotland,
where
it
has
been
enjoyed
for
many
generations,
it
is
now
danced
in
many
places
in
Europe,
USA,
Canada,
New
Zealand
etc
and
is
currently
very
popular
in
Japan.
Dances
come
in
three
tempos.
Reels
are
fast,
flowing
and
probably
the
most
energetic
of
the
tempos.
Jigs
are
jolly
and
bouncy.
The
slower
Strathspeys
are
stately
and
elegant
with
a
wealth
of
beautiful
slow
airs
to
accompany them.
Dances
are
danced
in
sets,
the
most
common
being
a
longways
set
of
four
couples,
with
first
couple
closest
to
the
band
(or
source
of
music!).
Although
you
dance
with
a
partner,
you
will
usually
change
partners
for
every
dance
and
so
there
is
no
need
at
all
to
have
to
come
with
a
partner.
For
classes,
any
casual lightweight clothing is suitable - you do get quite warm!
In
addition
to
the
weekly
classes,
Pershore
holds
social
events
during
the
year.
Since
there
are
about
15
similar
clubs
within
an
hour's
drive
of
Pershore,
there
is
a
Dance
to
go
to
most
weekends.
At
dances,
dress
is
more
formal
with
men
wearing
kilts
(if
they
have
them)
and
ladies
usually
wearing
skirts.
The Club meets on Wednesday night
(during school term times) at
Abbey Park First School,
Abbey Road, Pershore WR10 1DF
from 7.00pm to 8.30 pm
